The Biography of Spouse...

Spouse is short for 'Cheating on Spouses Can be a Messy Management Affair' - the original title taken from an article and used as the stage name for the group's main singer/songwriter, Jos???© Ayerve. In the fall of 1997, shortly after completing an initial set of recordings with engineer/producer, Thom Monahan, Spouse took form as a quartet, with John Cowden, Dan Pollard, and Ayerve alternating between bass & guitar, with Michael Merenda Jr. on drums. (A fifth original member & architect of the group's name, Alisha Goldblatt, would return in time to contribute to the band's most recent full-length release, 'Nozomi', after completing a year of teaching in Gainesville, Florida.)

An initial 111-run cassette, 'SPOUSE', became available to the public of Brunswick & Portland, Maine, the group gained local and regional attention for their brand of infectious pop. Articles, blurbs, and a cover story for the July, 1998 issue of Boston's 'Northeast Performer Magazine' fueled the band's momentum as the popsters continued to record and perform more and more material in anticipation of their debut, 'Nozomi'. Cowden and Goldblatt continued to record with the band, while opting out of a busy performance schedule to concentrate on furthering their academic careers.

In April of 1999, while awaiting the release of their nearly completed album, two singles were released on Pigeon Records - the band's alter-ego. 'Focus' and "1 Marvel to DC' featured two songs from 'Nozomi', ('Focus'/'Wonder Woman'), each accompanied by two b-sides: 'Marbles' & 'Harry Crooker, Fla.' and 'Superman' & 'X-Man (I want to be an...)'.

In the spring of 1999, Spouse was joined by Bart D'Alauro, of the pop sensation, Persona. D'Alauro's creative contributions and pop sensibility heightened the group's taste for subtle layers of keyboards. So much so, that the summer of 1999 became the welcome season for another musical addition, Liz Bustamante, former drummer and keyboardist for Skinner Pilot & Hippopotamus (respectively). With the ability to command just about any which instrument with tact and ease, Bustamante joined in the group's spirit of multiple instrument playing and switching, while augmenting all subtleties, synthetic and percussive.

In support of the vinyl singles, Spouse executed a brief and busy tour of the Northeast, from Portland, Maine to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The band was supported by Northampton natives and future label mates, Tappan Zee.

A brief stint was a quartet, following the departure of D'Alauro in August of 1999, would be broken by the adoption of one more into the the Spouse clan, Naomi Hamby, former guitarist for Wampeter and multi-instrumentalist from NYC. Hamby's guitar work would allow the band to recreate much more of the guitar sound from 'Nozomi'.

Spouse released 'Nozomi' on October 10, 2000. An extensive schedule of Northeast shows with performances as part of 3 different Festivals (CMJ (NYC), Northampton Music (MA), and Coaxial Music (Ptld., ME)), plus a handful of week-long tours awaits the band in the months ahead. In January of 2001, Spouse, will continue working on their second full-length release slated for August, 2001.

Nozomi
Schizophrenic pop...bang! An inevitable collision of glorious, lyrical, disillusion and feverish, sonic, imbalance; where a plethora of elements grab hold of each other and do the pop-choke-tango... sort of...
