Lonesome Brothers

The Lonesome Brothers were formed in 1986 by Ray Mason (bass, vocals) and Jim Armenti (guitar, vocals). A year later Bob Grant (drums) joined, and the rest is some story. These guys spent years playing in roadhouse honky-tonks, VFWs, and American Legions (four sets a night). They have opened for Junior Brown, Charlene Carter, Cry Cry Cry, Steve Forbert, Delbert McClinton, and many others. Jim's song "Down by the Water" was recorded by Cry Cry Cry and Cheri Knight (Ray is the bass player on Cheri's first album The Knitter). Growing up on Hank Sr., Dylan, the Beatles, Byrds, the Band, Buffalo Springfield...the Lonesomes are the real thing. You could compare them to Whiskeytown, the Bottle Rockets, or th Old 97's - except for the fact that they've been playing this stuff since before the musicians in those bands were in high school! They have, so farm released two albums on the Tar Hut lable (out of Boston). The latest, Diesel Therapy, builds on the rural warmth and back-porch wisdom that made their self-titled 1997 debut such a resonant example of great roots-pop songwriting. As one passerby said recently, "There's no one that don't like the Lonesome Brothers."
